The Navy Ribbed Rice Bowl blends rustic charm with refined craftsmanship through its deep navy-gray glaze and carefully carved vertical ridges. Crafted in Japan from durable Mino ware porcelain, this bowl features the traditional shinogi technique, where the surface is shaped by hand into flowing ridgelines. These gentle, organic curves not only add visual interest but also create a tactile texture that enhances the overall experience of use. Subtle variations in each piece speak to the skill and individuality of the artisan.
With a versatile medium size, this bowl is perfect for rice, small side dishes, or a light serving of soup. The gently flared rim makes it easy to hold, and the footed base ensures balance and presence on the table. Its glaze, layered in soft shades of blue-gray, deepens along the ridges to highlight the sculptural surface. The result is a piece that feels grounded and intentional, fitting seamlessly into both traditional and modern dining styles. Simple, beautiful, and made with care, this bowl is ideal for everyday meals or thoughtful moments.

The rice bowl, called ochawan (お茶碗) or simply chawan, is the most personal element among Japanese tableware. In Japan, each family member typically has their own personal rice bowl that they choose based on preference for portion size, material, and design. They may change bowls to match the season or occasion, too. For a bowl that holds a standard one-cup (150 g, 5.3 oz) serving of Japanese steamed rice, choose one that's 4.7 inches (12 cm) across and 2.4 inches (6 cm) high. For a smaller serving size (130 g, 4.6 oz), we recommend a bowl that's about 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) across and 2.3 inches (5.7 cm) high.Mino Ware
Mino ware refers to pottery traditionally made in Japan’s eastern Gifu Prefecture, primarily in Tajimi, Toki, Mizunami, and Kani. This ancient method of producing elegant, durable ceramics has roots going back over 1300 years to Japan’s Kofun period in the 7th century. Typically found nested into the mountainsides, the unique kilns used to produce Mino ware are often referred to as anagama kilns, and the master artisans producing these stunning products continue to adhere to rigid standards to produce only the highest quality ceramics. We offer a flat rate of USD $25 for shipping to the U.S., and Free Shipping on orders over USD $199.
