Kamoshika Douguten

Based in Mie Prefecture, Kamoshika Douguten was launched as the original brand of Yamaguchi Pottery Studio, rooted in the tradition of Banko ware. Believing that true craftsmanship begins with sincerity, its artisans create each piece with care, imagining the people and moments it will accompany. Working closely with local makers, Kamoshika produces everyday tools that bring warmth, comfort, and ease to daily life.

Banko Ware

Originating in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, Banko ware dates back to the mid-Edo period, when merchant and tea enthusiast Nunami Rozan began producing tea utensils in the region. Designated as a National Traditional Craft of Japan in 1979, it is known for its heat resistance and durability, making it ideal for donabe and teapots. Made from semi-porcelain clay rich in minerals, each piece withstands direct heat while retaining warmth efficiently. Balancing strength, practicality, and simple elegance, it remains an essential part of daily life in Japan.

Dinner Plate

Dinner plates are multifunctional for both Japanese and Western-style meals. Serve an individual composed meal this large plate or a one-plate dish like pasta and Japanese curry. You can also use it as a platter for four servings or for plating ingredients for hot pot.

The Plate That Makes Every Curry Better

This oval curry plate has quickly become one of my everyday favorites. I reach for it whenever I serve curry (of course!), but also for pasta, rice bowls, and any dish with sauce. It’s thoughtfully designed, beautiful on the table, and genuinely comfortable to use. Here’s why I love it so much.

Nami’s Pick portrait

1. Easy to Scoop, Easy to Enjoy

The gentle curve and shallow depth are just right. I can easily scoop rice and curry together without chasing food around the plate, which makes every bite feel effortless and satisfying.

It’s one of those small details you don’t realize you need—until you use it. After that, it’s hard to go back to flat plates that make saucy dishes harder to enjoy.

2. Wide Rim for a Secure Hold

I really appreciate the wide rim. It makes the plate easy and comfortable to hold, even when carrying a generous portion.

Whether I’m serving dinner to my family or bringing plates from the kitchen to the table, it feels stable and well-balanced in my hands. That sense of security makes everyday serving feel smooth and stress-free.

3. Perfect for Everyday Meals

While it’s ideal for Japanese curry, this plate is incredibly versatile. I use it for pasta, rice bowls, stews, and other saucy dishes we enjoy regularly.

It fits seamlessly into everyday meals, yet still looks special enough when I’m serving guests. If you’re looking for a plate that’s practical, beautiful, and a joy to use day after day, this one is truly a keeper.
