Description

The Small Hinoki and Sakura Bark Serving Tray highlights the quiet beauty of natural materials and the refinement of Japanese joinery. Crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress) with cherry sakura bark inlay and dovetail corner joints, each tray is a small work of craftsmanship that carries the warmth and character of the materials it is made from.

Its compact size makes it ideal for presenting a single cup of tea with accompanying sweets, displaying small decorative objects, or serving an intimate portion with care and elegance. The natural hinoki develops a gentle patina with use, and the cherry bark adds a distinctive reddish warmth that deepens over time. A beautiful and meaningful gift for anyone who appreciates the artistry of Japanese woodcraft.

More Details

Cherry Bark Work

Cherry bark work, known as Kabazaiku, is a traditional craft from Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It dates back to the late 18th century, when local samurai developed this unique technique using the bark of mountain cherry trees. The bark’s smooth sheen and deep natural color give each piece a warm, elegant finish that grows richer over time. Valued for its strength and ability to regulate humidity, it is ideal for tea canisters, trays, and other daily items. Passed down for more than 250 years, Kabazaiku continues to reflect the refined craftsmanship and quiet beauty of Japan’s northern tradition.

Trays & Tablemats

Artisan trays and tablemats come in round, rectangular, and half moon shapes. Japanese trays are often made of natural wood, lacquered wood, bamboo, or other organic materials. Trays are a regular feature of the traditional ichiju sansai meal or "one soup, three dishes" to hold and organize the meal's small dishes and bowls. They're also used to serve tea, sake, or snacks.
