Description

Bring a touch of tradition to your table with the Hinoki Sake Masu Cup, handcrafted from premium Japanese cypress. Once used for measuring rice and serving sake, the masu has become a beloved vessel that connects everyday life with centuries of culture. The natural, uncoated finish allows the gentle citrus-like fragrance of hinoki to shine through, creating a calming, sensory experience with every use.

Expertly joined with precise interlocking corners, the cup reflects the elegance of Japanese woodworking. Hinoki’s natural antibacterial qualities and resistance to moisture make it as practical as it is beautiful. Whether filled with sake, used to present appetizers or condiments, or placed as a decorative accent, the masu adds authenticity and quiet charm to any occasion.

For a more traditional touch, pair the Hinoki Sake Masu Cup with the Tajima Mount Fuji Gold Sake Glass (sold separately).Placing the glass inside the masu allows you to enjoy sake in a way that feels both classic and celebratory.

Enhance your home bar with our curated selection of Sake & Bar Ware for every occasion.

Sake Cup

Japanese sake cups are small drinking cups that come in a variety of shapes and sizes for ceremonial occasions to everyday use. The most common type is o-choko, a smaller cup that often comes in a set with a carafe (tokkuri). Another popular type is the slightly larger guinomi. Sake cups are made from clay, porcelain, glass, lacquerware, and even tin. A cup's material and shape are said to affect the aroma and flavor of the sake. These cups are a popular collectible tableware item.

FAQ

How do I drink sake from a hinoki masu cup?

Traditionally, sake is sipped from one of the corners of the masu — drinking from the corner lets the natural cypress fragrance gently rise as you sip. If the masu is served with a glass inside, drink from the glass first, then either pour the remaining sake into the masu or simply enjoy the aroma.

Why does my sake taste so strongly of cedar in the hinoki masu cup?

Hinoki cypress naturally imparts a strong cedar aroma when new — this is part of the traditional sake experience but can be overpowering at first, especially with warm sake. To soften the flavor, soak the cup in cold water for 5–10 minutes before each use during the first few uses. The intensity fades with repeated use.

Can I add a gift message to my order?

Yes. You may add a personalized gift message of up to 250 characters at checkout — it is printed on a card and included inside the package. Prices and order details are never shown on the card or anywhere in the shipment, so the recipient sees only your message and the gift itself.

Will my order be wrapped as a gift?

Yes. Every JOC Goods order is wrapped in a traditional Japanese furoshiki cloth before shipping at no extra charge — both gifts and personal orders. If your order includes many or large items, the furoshiki may be packed inside the box rather than wrapped around them. Prices are never included in any shipment.
