Description

The Golden Moon Black Lacquered Miso Soup Bowl features a contrast between its glossy black exterior and deep crimson interior. A hand-applied gold circle motif spans across both the lid and bowl body, aligning seamlessly when the lidded set is closed, representing the moon and its association in Japan with harmony and good fortune.

Made by Korindo, an Echizen lacquerware workshop, each bowl is coated by hand in layers of lacquer, a process that takes months to complete. The fitted lid helps retain heat and preserve aromas, and the smooth surface makes the bowl practical for hot miso soup, clear broths (osuimono), or traditional New Year's ozoni.

Well suited for both daily meals and special gatherings, this lidded Japanese soup bowl adds a striking accent to the dining table and serves as a practical gift for lacquerware enthusiasts.

More Details

Echizen Lacquerware

Echizen lacquerware, crafted in Fukui Prefecture for over 1,500 years, is said to have originated from the production of lacquered tableware offered to the Imperial Court and temples. Over the centuries, artisans in Echizen have focused on creating vessels meant to be used, balancing durability, functionality, and understated beauty rather than ornate decoration. This spirit of practical refinement remains at the heart of Echizen lacquerware today. Each piece is carefully made to be part of everyday life, reflecting the Japanese belief that true beauty lies in things used and cherished over time.

Miso Soup Bowl

These bowls are best suited for about one cup of miso soup; recognized as a standard US serving. The bowl's size and shape make it ideal for serving soups, appetizers, or desserts, and the traditional lid helps to keep the contents at a temperature. Due to its unique construction, the bowl does not transfer heat easily, making it ideal for maintaining either hot or cold dishes. These bowls may be considered too small for ramen servings, especially for those wishing to add additional toppings.

FAQ

Is Japanese lacquerware dishwasher safe?

Generally, no. Traditional Japanese lacquerware, including lacquered chopsticks, miso soup bowls, Oryoki bowls, and serving trays, should be hand-washed. Dishwasher heat, strong detergents, prolonged moisture, and contact with other items can gradually damage the lacquer finish or wooden base.

Wash lacquerware with warm water and a soft sponge, then dry it promptly with a soft cloth. Avoid prolonged soaking, abrasive cleaners, and scrub brushes. Even when labeled dishwasher safe, we strongly recommend hand-washing all lacquerware to preserve its finish and beauty over time.

Can I add a gift message to my order?

Yes. You may add a personalized gift message of up to 250 characters at checkout — it is printed on a card and included inside the package. Prices and order details are never shown on the card or anywhere in the shipment, so the recipient sees only your message and the gift itself.

Will my order be wrapped as a gift?

Yes. Every JOC Goods order is wrapped in a traditional Japanese furoshiki cloth before shipping at no extra charge — both gifts and personal orders. If your order includes many or large items, the furoshiki may be packed inside the box rather than wrapped around them. Prices are never included in any shipment.
