Tomioka Shoten

Rooted in the craft of kabazaiku, the traditional cherry bark work of Akita, Tomioka Shoten creates pieces to be used and cherished for many years. Founded in 1970 in Semboku, the company carries forward this rare art through refined design and a belief in lasting value over disposability. From tea caddies to boxes and card cases, each piece reflects the quiet richness that comes from living with things made to endure.

Cherry Bark Work

Cherry bark work, known as Kabazaiku, is a traditional craft from Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It dates back to the late 18th century, when local samurai developed this unique technique using the bark of mountain cherry trees. The barkfs smooth sheen and deep natural color give each piece a warm, elegant finish that grows richer over time. Valued for its strength and ability to regulate humidity, it is ideal for tea canisters, trays, and other daily items. Passed down for more than 250 years, Kabazaiku continues to reflect the refined craftsmanship and quiet beauty of Japanfs northern tradition.
