Description

Keep your rice fresh and well-protected with the Paulownia Wood Rice Container (10 lb/5 kg), expertly crafted from lightweight yet durable paulownia wood. This box naturally regulates humidity and resists insects, ensuring optimal storage conditions. The breathable design prevents mold and moisture buildup, preserving the freshness and flavor of your rice.

Available in two finishes:

  • Natural Finish – Showcasing the light, elegant beauty of untreated paulownia wood.
  • Kakishibu Finish – Enhanced with a traditional persimmon tannin (柿渋) coating for additional moisture, insect, and mold resistance, along with a rich, sophisticated color.

Functional & Thoughtful Design

  • Magnetic Lid & Measuring Cup Storage
Both the lid and measuring cup feature embedded magnets, allowing the cup to be placed on top of the lid or conveniently stored inside by attaching it to the underside. This keeps the cup hygienic and prevents it from getting lost.
The included wooden measuring box holds 1 rice-cooker cup (about 180 ml), the same capacity as the standard cup that comes with most rice cookers.
  • Smart Lid Placement
The lid has two grooves along the frame, allowing it to be securely hooked onto the edge of the box while scooping or refilling rice, eliminating the need to find a place to set it down.
  • Clear Acrylic Lid
A high-clarity acrylic panel ensures easy visibility of contents, so you always know how much rice is left.
  • Stackable Design
The box can be neatly stacked to expand capacity as needed. For example, stacking two 5 kg boxes gives you 10 kg of storage, while combining the 3 kg version allows up to 8 kg of rice to be stored. This makes it easy to customize your storage to fit both your kitchen space and household needs.
  • Eco-Friendly & Antibacterial
Combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern functionality, this sustainable and antibacterial storage solution is perfect for any kitchen.

With its elegant design and practical features, this paulownia rice container is a refined and convenient way to keep your rice fresh.

The Japanese Rice Container I Trust for Fresh, Organized Grains

I’ve used many rice storage containers over the years, but this Japanese paulownia (kiri) rice container truly stands out. It’s simple, thoughtful, and rooted in Japanese wisdom—exactly the kind of everyday tool I love having in my kitchen. Here’s why I’m so fond of it:

Nami’s Pick portrait

1. Naturally Keeps Rice Fresh

Product image - Nami’s Pick

Paulownia wood has been used in Japan for centuries to store precious items, and it’s especially wonderful for rice. The wood naturally regulates humidity, helping rice stay dry and fresh without becoming too dry. It also deters insects, so I feel confident storing uncooked rice in my pantry. No extra gadgets or chemicals—just nature doing its job.

2. Thoughtful, Functional Design

One detail I really appreciate is the measuring cup that attaches neatly to the backside of the lid. It’s always right there when I need it—no digging through a rice bag or misplacing it. This kind of small but clever design makes daily cooking feel smoother and more enjoyable.

I also love the clear lid, which lets me see how much rice is left at a glance without opening the container. It’s such a simple feature, but it makes staying organized effortless.

3. Clean, Stackable Storage

The container has a clean, minimalist look that fits beautifully in a Japanese-style kitchen, but it also works just as well in a modern pantry. Because it’s stackable, I can store different types of rice—without taking up extra space. Everything stays tidy and easy to access.

This paulownia rice container is one of those everyday tools that makes a real difference over time. If you cook rice often, I think you’ll appreciate its simplicity and reliability as much as I do.

FAQ

Why is paulownia wood used for storing rice?

Paulownia is a traditional Japanese wood that naturally regulates humidity and allows air to circulate around the rice. It keeps grains fresh longer than plastic or metal storage, helps protect against insects, and is the same wood used for centuries in Japanese kome-bitsu (rice boxes) and kimono storage chests.

Do I need to wash the paulownia rice container before first use?

No, do not wash the paulownia rice container with water — the wood is highly absorbent and is designed to stay dry. Simply wipe the inside and outside with a clean, dry cloth before adding rice for the first time. The same applies to the matching wooden rice measuring cup.

I noticed insects in my rice container. What should I do?

Insects almost always come from the rice itself (especially organic varieties), not the container. Remove all rice and discard affected grains. Wipe the inside with a dry cloth or vacuum out bran, then air-dry fully before refilling. To prevent recurrence: finish rice before refilling, wipe regularly, and store in a cool, dry place.

Can I add a gift message to my order?

Yes. You may add a personalized gift message of up to 250 characters at checkout — it is printed on a card and included inside the package. Prices and order details are never shown on the card or anywhere in the shipment, so the recipient sees only your message and the gift itself.

Will my order be wrapped as a gift?

Yes. Every JOC Goods order is wrapped in a traditional Japanese furoshiki cloth before shipping at no extra charge — both gifts and personal orders. If your order includes many or large items, the furoshiki may be packed inside the box rather than wrapped around them. Prices are never included in any shipment.
