Description
The Geometric Tortoise Shell Mini Sauce Dish is decorated with a traditional tortoise-shell pattern, a hexagonal design modeled on the segments of a tortoise's back. In Japan, the tortoise is a symbol of long life, and the pattern has been used for centuries as a sign of good fortune. Here, the hexagons cover the whole surface of a small dish in a traditional Japanese lobed oval shape.
Painted by hand on white Arita ware porcelain, broad bands of deep blue link the hexagons, with darker dots where the bands meet. Inside each white hexagon, a smaller hexagon is outlined in thin red line, and a blue line follows the edge of the rim. The blue is painted beneath the glossy glaze, where it shifts slightly in tone from stroke to stroke, and the red is added on top in overglaze enamel.
Sized for soy sauce, condiments, or small bites, this Japanese sauce dish works as a soy sauce plate for sushi or sashimi at everyday meals and special gatherings. It pairs easily with other blue-and-white Japanese dishware. The dish comes from Keizan Kiln, a family kiln in Arita, Saga Prefecture, now run by the third generation.

Arita Ware
Arita ware, Japan’s first porcelain, originated in the early 17th century in the town of Arita, Saga Prefecture. Using pure porcelain stone sourced from the mountains of Amakusa, artisans created brilliantly white ceramics that quickly became celebrated for their beauty and strength. During the Edo period, Arita grew into a major center of porcelain production, with its works exported to Europe through the port of Imari, where they captivated collectors and royal courts alike. Today, Arita ware continues to embody the harmony of artistry and function, bringing timeless elegance to modern dining around the world.Sauce Dish
